DOGS ARE BANNED from all Seaside Award resorts and Blue Flag beaches and should be kept
on leads in all areas adjoining the beach. However the ban, which is normally
enforced through bye laws, will only affect the main section of the beach
for the main season, generally between May and September. Dogs will be
allowed on nearby stretches of beach and on most rural beaches. Areas
which ban dogs should be clearly sign posted.

CANINE HEALTH CONCERN
- formed in 1994 by Catherine O'Driscoll who was sent scientific papers which told her
that commercial pet food was nutritionally inadequate, and that many deficiency diseases are the
direct result of poor feeding. She also learnt that the annual shots we give to our pets each
year in the belief that we are protecting them from disease are actually the largest cause of
ill health in our pets today.

Sign Language
I have noticed for many years that my dogs understood some of my “sign language”—not that I taught them with intent, since I didn’t know how to do that, but just that they picked up on one particular thing I did frequently: they would follow me into the bathroom, get their pat, and then, when I would reach for the toilet paper roll, off they went. When my first indoor dog did this, I was amused. But successors have done it with regularity as well, and by now I know that it is not just an aberration… They get a message I was not even intending to signal: I’m through here. No more pats for now. Our Sally-Dog has picked up another signal recently—again one that I do not make for her benefit. She sleeps beside me on the couch and when I snap my laptop shut, she jumps up, ready for whatever may come next—walk, breakfast, that awful vacuum cleaner (time to whisk her toys out of its way!) And today, for the first time I was successful with a sign I have been consciously trying to teach her: pointing my finger toward a piece of yummy food that has escaped her notice on the floor somewhere. For a long time she didn’t respond to my pointing to something, but today, she finally made the connection and followed my signal to find the bone in the grass! Dogs are such fun! (Teresa) |
